Grow Local Colorado is a group of volunteers dedicated to promoting local food, local community, and local economy.
A Community Effort

In the past seven years Grow Local Colorado's mission to grow and share fresh produce with and for those in our community lacking access to healthy food has grown in many ways. We started with one garden and now oversee ten. Our first season provided about 250 pounds of produce to three local organizations serving those in need. Last year we shared over 4,000 pounds of vegetables with a dozen such groups. We started with a handful of volunteers providing a little over 100 hours of their time to growing vegetables. In 2015 544 volunteers put in more than 1,000 hours starting seedlings, prepping gardens, weeding, harvesting, demonstrating food preparation and delivering fresh picked vegetables to organizations throughout the Metro Area. Our first season's harvest was valued at a few hundred dollars. Since then our gardens have produced over $40,000 worth of fresh vegetables. In short, we couldn't have done this without our volunteers. We are so deeply grateful for the time and talents shared by so many of you.
Unfortunately the numbers of hungry Metro residents has also grown. Therefore we are looking for groups to commit to one morning or evening per month, from June through September, to help in one of our gardens. We'll provide an experienced gardener to supervise the group. This is a fun way to enjoy an hour or two outdoors, while knowing you are helping your neighbors in need. If interested in helping, please contact us at: [email protected].

The End of Another Growing Season

Anyone who had a garden along the Front Range this grow season would not say it was a lucky year. In fact, many of us refer to it as the year of the plagues. A sudden drop in temperatures last November damaged most of the fruit trees in our community which meant little if any fruit in 2015. Then we had the hail storms in late May and early June. For some of Grow Local's gardens we planted three times due to hail damage. In other gardens rabbits ate all of the spinach. Most of our sites saw some damage caused by squirrels. The Japanese Beetles invaded gardens that had never seen them before. We even had someone go for a joy ride through one of our gardens this season. However, looking back on this season we count our blessings thanks to people like you. Because of 428 adult volunteers and 112 youth volunteers putting in nearly 1,000 hours of work we grew 3,000 pounds of fresh produce for 12 communities in need. That means families that normally don't have access to fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables were provided with 12,000 servings of Denver's finest. If you were one of our volunteers, thank you. Your dedication to growing local food is what makes our community resilient. We look forward to seeing you again next season.
